We’ve all been there before.
You have bills due, your car broke down (or another emergency popped up), you’re hit with random expenses, and it just seems like money is flying out of your pockets left and right.
When you’re stressing about money, the last thing you want to hear is “don’t stress”. So instead of telling you not to worry, here’s exactly what to do when you’re stressing about money.
Stop Being Ashamed
First things first, if you’re feeling ashamed about your finances being in disarray or the fact that you don’t know what to do, stop. Stressing about money can lead to the feeling of being ashamed. But the fact is that most people have been in the same position as you.
Having shame can cause you to dig an even deeper hole for yourself, through guilt spending or giving up altogether. And that won’t help you or your situation. Instead, think positive, and start working on what you need to do next.
The second step to help you stop stressing about money is to make arrangements. Can you set up payment plans for your bills? Can you Uber to work or have a friend drive you while you save up the money to fix your car?
Thinking with a clear and level head can help you come up with solutions and arrangements that can help you while you’re figuring out your finances.
Establish An Emergency Fund
Once you’ve made the proper arrangements, now you can focus on saving your money for the future.
Life happens, and not having an emergency fund can mean the difference between paying for an emergency and getting into a serious amount of debt.
To set yourself up for the future, so you never have to stress about money again, set up an emergency fund.
Even just a few dollars is better than nothing if another emergency arises. But’s recommended to have at least $1,000 in your emergency fund. If you have to use it, just vow to replenish it as soon as you are financially able.
Take It One Step At A Time
While many people have dug themselves out of financial insecurity, debt, and stress, it takes time. Stressing about money didn’t necessarily happen overnight, and neither will the climb out of financial stress.
However, taking one step at a time, focusing on the most important aspects, and establishing a safety net can make the world of a difference in how you feel and react when it comes to your finances.
Make More Money
While you still need to make sure that you’re managing your money (or learning how to manage your money if you’re new to personal finance), it’s also worth noting that you can make more money too. These days, anything can be turned into a side hustle. There is bound to be one that works with you and your schedule.
With the extra money you make with your side hustle, you can add it to savings, pay off bills or debt, and even start investing in your future. Having an extra stream of income, no matter how small, is a great resource. It gives you peace of mind, some extra cash, and the ability to increase your earnings should you choose to do so.
