Freelancing is one of the most slept on ways to earn income online.

Sure, there’s blogging, e-commerce, and other methods of earning income online. But these strategies can take A WHILE to be profitable. I’m talking years.

According to a study, 81% of bloggers never make even $100.

That’s not a pretty statistic and that’s definitely not enough to pay for even ONE of your bills. With freelancing, on the other hand, you can start selling yourself today and get hired as soon as tomorrow.

 

What is Freelancing?

You’ve probably heard the term before but could have an unclear idea of what it’s all about. Let’s take a step back and talk about the basics.

Freelancing is simply working without one boss. A freelancer is anyone who’s offering a service independent of a company.

So… makeup artists can freelance, hair stylists can freelance, photographers can freelance, writers can freelance, designers can freelancer, programmers can freelance… and so on.

You get the point.

 

Why Don’t More People Talk About Freelancing?

Freelancing doesn’t seem as sexy as the idea of racking in the dough as a celebrated blogger or influencer. You may have visions of laying on the beach with a pina colada working maybe a few hours a day on your business.

Sorry to burst your bubble, honey. This can all happen, but it probably won’t happen tomorrow and the bills need to be paid. I don’t want you to waste your time on these ideas if you’re in a financial pinch because there’s a faster way to make money.

When you need money to pay a bill, say, next month, freelancing is a more practical way of earning income than becoming the next IT girl on social.

 

The Benefits of Freelancing

Let me jump right off of my soap box and let’s discuss the benefits of freelancing:

  • Freedom to work as much or as little as you want: Getting a part-time job would give you another boss. You are your own boss when you freelance on the side. You can set your own schedule and work when you want to.
  • Set your own prices: When working independent of an employer, you set your own prices for the work. You also get to take home all of the money instead of giving any entity a cut of your profits.
  • No limit to your earnings: You can earn as much or as little as you want depending on how much work you do and how much you charge.
  • It can grow into a full-time income: Your freelance income can turn into a full-time income and replace (or surpass) income from your full-time job.
  • It can expand your brand: Last, but certainly not least, freelancing can turn into a larger business. If you take a look at some prominent business owners, you’ll find that many have started freelancing before they grew their business. Freelancing was a way to test out the market and experiment with different ways to deliver their service. Then, they took the knowledge to form an agency or expand their business.

 

My Freelancing Story

Freelancing is how I got started in business. About 5 years ago, I started a blog to document my personal finance journey. Since writing is something I loved, I decided I wanted to do it full-time.

I quickly realized (after quitting my job, of course) that blogging alone just wasn’t going to cut it. So I started applying for freelance writing jobs and did unpaid internships.

As my experience writing for different clients grew and my income started to grow. Eventually, I hit my highest earning month—a little over $9,000. Not too shabby.

 

Who Can Freelance?

There are two main things you need to be a freelancer:

  • A skill that people are willing to pay for
  • Discipline

For me, there’s a big market of companies that need writers to write online content. Online content is how businesses sell products nowadays. As for discipline, I’m not a perfect writer, but I’m deeply passionate about writing and money. So I’ve studied personal finance as my speciality, I studied how to run a business, and I listen to the needs of my clients.

I’m disciplined in my approach to how I grow as a writer and how I execute work.
